The premise

After her father’s death, a granddaughter inherits her grandfather’s childhood drawings from the 1903 Kishinev pogrom. The drawings lead her into trial records, family silence, and a moral entanglement that the archive never resolved.

The film explores memory, inherited trauma, and the 1903 Kishinev pogrom through a contemporary narrative structure. It is not a reconstruction of events for their own sake. It is an inquiry into how testimony is transmitted, what it costs to inherit it, and what it means to complete an archive.

The central question

What if the man who saved your grandfather’s life also gave another family to the mob — and your family helped him walk free?

The question is not a theme placed on the surface. It is the structural tension of the work: rescue and betrayal occupy the same act; gratitude and complicity cannot be separated cleanly; the record contains both a verdict and a sentence the court never saw.

Structure

The narrative moves between contemporary Europe and Kishinev in 1903. The archive is not a backdrop; it is a dramatic instrument. Drawings, account books, marginalia, and trial registers carry the story across generations, and each discovery changes the moral position of the person who finds it.

The film’s structure follows the studio’s doctrine: the question precedes the story, structure carries meaning, and form follows concept. The past is not illustrated. It is made present as a problem the protagonist must decide what to do with.

Form and method

The project approaches the period through archival research and a restrained visual language. The aim is precision rather than spectacle: testimony is handled as evidence, not as decoration, and the emotional weight comes from structure rather than from dramatized violence.

Sound, image, and document work together to preserve the uncertainty at the center of the story. The film does not resolve the moral ambiguity. It gives it a form that can be examined.
